Yong Soon Min
Artist Presentation

Thursday, July 2, 2015 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

With a nod to her rich career shaped by art, activism, teaching, writing and independent curating, Yong Soon Min offers highlights from her varied and evolving art practice that has included mixed media installations, video, photography, and performance.

Yong Soon’s presentation will focus on artwork exhibited in 2014 at the Seoul Museum of Art, where she used bojagi as the platform to address women in Korean history from colonial times to militarized modernity to Korean America. Her work reinterprets the diasporic reality of leaving her roots, upheaval, and the passage into another life as related to her own life experiences.

Yong Soon is a Professor of Art at the University of California, Irvine teaching installation and intermedia art. She received an M.F.A. degree from the University of California, Berkeley and completed post-graduate work at the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program. She is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship grant and a Fulbright scholarship. Among her inclusion in international exhibitions have been the Havana Bienal and Gwangju Biennale. Various residencies awarded include the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center in Italy and the Ssamzie Space in Seoul, Korea.

The presentation is free to the public.

This program is in conjunction with the exhibitions Bojagi: Unwrapping Korean American Identities and CONSTRUCT\S: Installations by Asian Pacific American Women Artists.
