Film Screening: CAMBODIAN SON
A film by Masahiro Sugano

Sunday, April 17, 2016 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

“How do you survive when you belong nowhere?”

Cambodian Son documents the life of deported poet, Kosal Khiev after receiving the most important performance invitation of his career—to represent the Kingdom of Cambodia at the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Kosal would travel to London having only taken two flights prior; first, as a 1-year-old refugee child whose family fled Cambodia and, then as a 32-year-old criminal “alien” forcibly returned to Cambodia in 2011.

Armed only with memorized verses, he must face the challenges of being a deportee while navigating his new fame as Phnom Penh’s premiere poet.

  • The filmmakers will be in attendance. A Q&A will immediately follow the screening.
  • Tickets to the screening are free. Admission is required to access museum galleries.

The film is presented with community partner, Rajana Society, and in conjunction with the exhibition, Khmer American: Naga Sheds Its Skin, currently on display at Wing Luke Museum.

Online reservations are closed. Due to limited seating, a wait-list will be created the day of the screening. RSVPs will receive priority seating followed by wait-list individuals on a first-come-first-served basis until all seats are filled.

Location: In the Tateuchi Story Theatre
Fees: Screening is free to the public. Admission is required to access museum galleries.
